This brooding set of 'atmospheres' was commissioned by a Derby cinema to accompany screenings of Robert Weine's 1919 silent classic. Ostensibly furnishing the long-toiling ITN (in effect twins Nigel and Klive Humberstone) with an opportunity to essay their considerable skills, honed over a decade of Sheffield-based art noise, much of the album works as instrumental music in its own right. Not surprisingly, given the stark nature of the movie, much here is taut or melancholic, with the whirr of cin projectors, metallic sequencers and other mysterious 'sounds' interspersed with semi-orchestral keyboards and sensurround string synths. Although industrial buzzes and hums dominate, there are some quite beautiful soundscapes too - especially on 'Doctor's House' and 'Sanitarium', while the self-explanatory 'Fairground' is suitably frenetic.
